Anime: Dragonball Z

Like most kids my age, I watched Dragonball Z(DBZ) on Cartoon Network's Toonami segment, the program that came on weekdays at around 4PM and featured a select handful of anime shows, Dragonball Z being one of them. It's a great anime, and you probably already know that if you've watched it, and if you haven't, you've definitely heard about it. Why? Because it's just that good. As with all great things, it did have some flaws, some very asinine flaws. Here's a few that caught my attention.

The episodes were way too short when they aired on Toonami. You could say that they went by fast because it was such a great show, but you'd just be letting the problems slide away. I don't let things slide, so here's why it was so fucking short. First off, Toonami had way too many fucking commercial breaks that just pissed me off. They not only showed one or two commercials during a show, but I'm pretty sure I remember them going as far as three commercial breaks. And they came on at the worst times as well. It's like, "Oh shit is Vegeta gonna kill him?" and next thing you know you're watching a bunch of douchebags flying around on silver surf boards drinking Capri Sun. Gay. Besides the regular commercials, you'd get the pointless twenty second animations of some random Toonami character or some gay shit like that. As gay as these were, I always hoped they would come up because they were a lot shorter than the regular commercials and I really didn't want to watch some a commercial about Sunny Delight that I've seen a hundred fucking times already.

Although the network was pretty bad, it doesn't take all the blame for why Dragonball Z episodes were too short. Dragonball Z shares half the blame as well, and here's why. The characters wouldn't shut the fuck up. They trash talked like there was no tomorrow. Shit man, it's alright that there's trash talk in the anime, that's what made it good, but sometimes it was just way over done or dragged out for too long. Instead of fighting and continuing with the story, they would just sit there and fucking talk to each other. Fuck, it was like watching those pointless presidential speeches. No one gives a shit about what you have to say, just shut the fuck up and do it already. Another waste of time was the fact that the characters would take fucking forever to charge up. I remember there was an episode in the Cell Saga where Gohan is fighting Cell that just really pissed me off when it ended. Why? Because it was like getting a blowjob without the happy ending. It was fucking pointless. The whole episode consisted of a power struggle between Cell and Gohan basically charging their attacks up. That, and the constant screaming and yelling coming from both characters. This is how it went that day: turned on the TV with excitement, wasted twenty minutes on pointless yelling, ten minutes on gay commercials, and then I got to watch some gay credits and a preview of next time's episode. And you know what the preview consisted of? Yeah, you guessed it, more fucking pointless screaming.

Aside from these time vampires, there were a few other things that had me saying, "What the fuck?" One of these things was some of the characters in the show. I just thought some of the characters were just so fucking useless. One of these characters was Yamcha. Yamcha's the wanna-be badass who just fucking sucks balls in the end. Why did he even exist in the show? It's not like he actually did anything, and if he did, it was too fucking insignificant for me to remember. It seemed like he may have played a role earlier on in the series, but after that he was just another useless background character that no one gave a shit about. No one in the show even seemed to like him. He was the lonely asshole who tried to fit in where he didn't belong. Even Tien was cooler than him. Hell, at least Tien had a sidekick, even if it was a fucking midget that looked like a mime. Another character that just pissed me off was Hercule. Yea, that knock-off champion wrestler that was here to save the day. It might have been a humorous concept that the creator tried to incorporate into the anime, but most of the time Hercule just pissed me off with his retarded ass character. He basically took all the credit from the saiyans after they defeated Cell. That's some bullshit; it just pissed me off as a kid knowing he took all their hard earned credit.

As far as the series went, Dragonball Z was over all great. And then Dragonball GT came out. I watched a few episodes of it, but it didn't hit me as hard as DBZ did. I was pretty disappointed. The enemies were a letdown. From what I watched, they were robots and aliens or some shit. Actually, everyone else has been robots and aliens (i.e. Freiza, the androids). I don't know, it just didn't grab my attention as much. I think they should have made it better, or had it end with the Buu Saga.

I heard the remake, Dragon Ball Kai, fixed a lot of these problems, but I'm not going to re-watch a series where I already know what the fuck happens next. At least now new viewers have an option: watch the ass-ridden classic, or the sassy modern remake? Either way, have fun.
